about

STORYLINE:
A fellow from the seedy side attracts a chick of "class". Knowing that eventually the chick will hate the life, he urges her to get out before things get too far along. Confident she'll be the "one" who can change his wicked ways, she jumps in with both feet. Marriage and kids...etc. Ultimately the glow fades badly.

This is his song of sorrow but without apology.

lyrics

I Know What You’re Thinking about Me
By Peter Kern

Chorus:
You see me with a smile
And a scowl forms on your face
When the children hug me tight, I see you cringe
I'm hoping for the best, but prepared to face the worst
My love for you is unchanged but I know what you are thinking
I know what you’re thinking about me
Verse 1:
You glare at me dressing in the morning
You question where I go, though I can’t say
In the dead of night I feel your gaze upon me
When you finally fall asleep I hit my knees and pray.
Verse 2:
I told you from the start, my path was different
I urged you to be smart and break from me
But you brushed my words aside, and went against the tide
Made a home and started our own family
Verse 3:
My hustle was not meant to be your problem
The risk was mine that was always understood
I’m a creature of the street, what I have is all I need
I’ve never been to prison and I suppose that’s pretty good
Repeat Chorus:
Verse 4:
What I do I have to do to make a living
Outside the law is just the place I work
The skills that I possess can have awful side effects
It's a legacy I choose to not pass on
Verse 5:
"I told you so" you'll never hear me utter
Reflective introspection had its way
To live inside regret brings diminished self respect
Just because your eyes were open didn’t mean you were awake
Repeat Chorus:
Verse 6:
I share my cup of coffee with swirling memories
Like puzzle pieces scattered in a storm
Sincere sorrow I concede, but innocence I plead
Despite what you are thinking, my heart is sadly sinking
But my pride and I survive; you did what you had to do
